Can you make your existing heating system smart?

Can you make your existing heating system smart?

Would you like to turn on your heating before leaving work, warm up the house before arriving home or adjust your heating schedule without getting up from the sofa?

Smart heating controls make all of this possible.

But if you already have a perfectly good central heating system, you might be wondering whether you need to replace your boiler to take advantage of them.

The good news is that, in many cases, you can make your existing heating system smart without replacing the boiler.

Depending on your current setup, you might only need a compatible Wi-Fi gateway, or you may benefit from upgrading your programmer and thermostats.

Let's explain the different options, what each product actually does and how to choose the right one for your home.

What does making your heating system smart actually mean?

In a traditional central heating system, you might have a timer that switches your heating on every morning and evening, along with a thermostat to regulate the temperature.

This works perfectly well, but changing your heating schedule often means going to the programmer and adjusting it manually.

With a compatible smart heating system, you can make many of these changes using an app on your phone.

For example, the EPH EMBER app allows you to:

  • Turn compatible heating controls on and off remotely.
  • Change heating schedules from your smartphone.
  • Adjust temperatures in heating zones fitted with compatible thermostats.
  • Boost heating or hot water when needed.
  • Manage your heating when you're away from home.

It's particularly handy when your daily routine changes or when you want the house warm before you arrive home.

And because you're able to adjust heating schedules more easily, you may also avoid heating your home unnecessarily.

Option 1: Add smart control to your existing EPH heating controls

Best for homeowners who already have compatible EPH wireless heating controls.

Before buying a completely new heating control system, it's worth checking what's already installed in your home.

If you have a compatible EPH wireless programmer, you may be able to add smartphone control using the EPH GW04 Dual Band RF and Wi-Fi Gateway.

What does the EPH GW04 Gateway do?

Think of the gateway as the link between your heating controls and your smartphone.

Your compatible EPH heating controls communicate with the gateway, which connects to your home Wi-Fi network and the EMBER app.

This allows you to manage supported heating functions remotely.

The GW04 supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi networks.

There is one important thing to remember: the GW04 is not a universal Wi-Fi adapter for any heating system.

It must be used with compatible EPH equipment.

If you have an older programmer or a different brand of heating controls, you should check compatibility before ordering.

Option 2: Upgrade to an EPH EMBER heating control pack

Best for homeowners who want to replace older controls with a compatible smart heating system.

If your existing controls aren't compatible with the EMBER app, an EPH EMBER heating pack may be a more suitable solution.

Rather than buying all the main control components separately, these packs bring together an EPH wireless programmer, thermostats and a Wi-Fi gateway.

But what do the different EMBER model numbers mean?

The main difference between the PS04, PS08 and PS14 packs is the number of heating and hot water zones they are designed to control.

First, what is a heating zone?

A zone is an area or function of your heating system that can be controlled independently.

For example, a house might have:

  • One zone for the central heating.
  • One zone for hot water.

That would be a two-zone system.

Another house might have separate heating controls for upstairs and downstairs, plus a third zone for hot water.

That would be a three-zone system.

Hot water counts as a zone in these examples, so a three-zone system doesn't necessarily mean three separate areas of radiators.

If you'd like to understand zoning in more detail, read our guide to creating heating zones in your house.

Other EPH pack configurations are available for different heating arrangements.

EPH PS04 – 2 Zone EMBER Heating Control Pack

A good option for homes with one central heating zone and one hot water zone.

The EPH PS04 includes:

  • R27-RF-V2 two-zone wireless programmer.
  • One RFR-V2 room thermostat.
  • One RFC-V2 hot water cylinder thermostat.
  • One GW04 Wi-Fi gateway.

Imagine a home where all the radiators are controlled together, but the hot water has its own separate schedule.

The PS04 provides a way to manage those two functions independently through compatible EMBER controls.

You could have your central heating scheduled for the morning and evening while setting different times for hot water.

EPH PS08 – 3 Zone EMBER Heating Control Pack

A good option for homes with separate upstairs and downstairs heating, plus hot water.

The EPH PS08 includes:

  • R37-RF-V2 three-zone wireless programmer.
  • Two RFR-V2 room thermostats.
  • One RFC-V2 cylinder thermostat.
  • One GW04 Wi-Fi gateway.

For example, you could schedule your downstairs heating to come on earlier in the evening while keeping the upstairs heating on a different schedule.

You would also have separate control of your hot water.

This arrangement can be particularly useful in homes where different areas have different heating requirements.

EPH PS14 – 4 Zone EMBER Heating Control Pack

A good option for larger homes with three separate heating zones and hot water.

The EPH PS14 includes:

  • R47-RF-V2 four-zone wireless programmer.
  • Three RFR-V2 room thermostats.
  • One RFC-V2 cylinder thermostat.
  • One GW04 Wi-Fi gateway.

For example, a larger home might have separate heating zones for the ground floor, first floor and another living area, with hot water controlled independently.

The PS14 allows those four zones to be managed separately.

This gives you greater flexibility over when different parts of the house are heated.

Which EMBER pack should you choose?

The important thing is to choose a system that matches your home's existing heating arrangement.

A larger house doesn't automatically need a four-zone system, just as a smaller house doesn't necessarily have only one heating zone.

The number of independently controlled heating circuits, your hot water setup and the controls already installed will determine which pack is suitable.

If you're unsure, ask your plumber or heating installer to identify the number of zones in your system before purchasing.

Also remember that a smart programmer cannot create additional physical heating circuits by itself.

If you want to divide an existing heating circuit into separate zones, additional plumbing or electrical work may be needed.

Option 3: Add smart radiator controls

Best for homeowners who want more individual control over their radiators.

Perhaps you're happy with your main heating controls but would like more flexibility over the temperature in individual rooms.

This is where EPH smart radiator thermostats are worth considering.

EPH eTRV Smart RF Radiator Thermostat

The EPH eTRV is a wireless radiator thermostat that works with a compatible EPH RF16 controller.

Rather than relying solely on one thermostat to manage a larger heating area, the eTRV system allows more individual radiator temperature control.

For example, you may prefer a cooler temperature in a spare bedroom than in the living room.

The eTRV requires compatible radiator valve fittings and an appropriate EPH control system.

It doesn't connect directly to your Wi-Fi on its own.

EPH RF16 – 16 Zone Controller

The RF16 is designed to work with EPH smart radiator thermostats and can manage up to 16 radiator zones.

This makes it an option worth discussing with your installer if you're considering more detailed radiator control throughout your home.

For compatible installations, adding the EPH GW04 gateway also allows the RF16 system to connect to the EMBER app.

What about smart hot water control?

EPH also offers the eTRV-HW Smart Cylinder Thermostat, designed to work with the RF16 radiator control system.

It provides wireless hot water temperature control as part of a compatible installation and requires the appropriate hot water valve.

It's worth checking the full installation requirements with your heating professional before purchasing individual components.

Will you save money by upgrading to smart heating?

Smart heating controls can help reduce unnecessary heating by giving you more flexibility over schedules and temperatures.

For example, if you're delayed at work, being able to change your heating schedule remotely could prevent the house from being heated earlier than necessary.

Similarly, keeping unused rooms at suitable lower temperatures may help reduce heating demand.

However, actual savings depend on your existing controls, heating habits, insulation and the efficiency of your heating system.

A smart thermostat won't automatically fix an inefficient boiler or poorly insulated home.

The real benefit is having more control over how and when your heating operates.

Do you need a plumber to install smart heating controls?

Although the EMBER app is designed to be convenient to use, installing or upgrading heating controls can involve electrical wiring and changes to the heating system.

We recommend consulting a suitably qualified heating professional before purchasing or installing a new system.

They can confirm:

  • Whether your existing boiler is suitable.
  • Which EPH products are compatible with your controls.
  • How many heating and hot water zones you have.
  • Whether additional valves, wiring or other components are required.
  • Which EMBER pack is appropriate for your home.
Are there Grants available for smart heating controls in Ireland?

If you're considering upgrading your heating controls, it's worth checking whether you qualify for financial assistance.

The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) currently offers a Heating Controls Grant of up to €700 for eligible homeowners.

The grant is intended to support substantial improvements to existing heating control systems, helping homeowners manage their heating and hot water more efficiently.

However, not every smart heating upgrade qualifies.

Simply installing a Wi-Fi gateway, replacing an existing programmer or adding app control generally won't be enough.

To qualify, your home and the proposed installation must meet SEAI's requirements, and the work must be completed by an SEAI-registered contractor.

Importantly, you must receive grant approval before purchasing materials or starting the work.

If you're considering a larger heating controls upgrade, we recommend discussing grant eligibility with your installer before ordering any equipment.

For the latest eligibility requirements and application details, visit the SEAI Heating Controls Grant page.
