How to use it:

Preparation of the application surface:
The substrates for the FORTAX 6400 adhesive sealing must be clean and dry. Impurities such as dust, grease, oil, tar, bitumen and release agents like as surfactants and silicones must be removed. Sandy and rough surfaces may need to be pre-treated with the Gerband Primer 6300.

Application:
Apply the FORTAX® 6400 adhesive sealant with an 8mm thick bead on the fixed surface. Increase the sealant thickness where the surface is uneven.

In case of wet application:
If ‘wet bonding’, the air-tightness-layer must be gently press down according to the DIN 4108-7 with a relief loop so that a 3-4 mm thick an adhesive seal layer is maintained.

In case of dry application:
After a short drying time, pressure is required to ensure a strong bond to the airtightness layer.

Bonding of the airtightness layer:

  • The air-tightness-layer must be stress-free and fastened.
  • Check that completed connections are secure.

In the world of construction, DIY projects, and even everyday household maintenance, the importance of airtightness cannot be overstated. Airtight sealants are valuable tools that play a significant role in maintaining energy efficiency, preventing moisture intrusion, and enhancing the overall durability of structures.

Benefits of Airtight Sealants

  1. Energy Efficiency: One of the primary benefits of using airtight sealants is their ability to improve energy efficiency. By sealing gaps, cracks, and joints in buildings, these sealants prevent air leakage. This minimizes the exchange of indoor and outdoor air, leading to reduced heating and cooling costs. Airtightness helps maintain a consistent indoor temperature, easing the workload on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
  2. Moisture Control: Airtight sealants act as barriers against moisture infiltration. Uncontrolled moisture can lead to the growth of mold and mildew, compromising indoor air quality and the structural integrity of the building. Sealants prevent water vapor from entering wall cavities and other vulnerable areas, reducing the risk of rot and degradation.
  3. Improved Indoor Air Quality: When a building is airtight, it becomes easier to control indoor air quality. By sealing gaps and cracks, you can minimize the entry of pollutants, allergens, and outdoor contaminants into your living or working space. This is particularly crucial for individuals with respiratory conditions or allergies.
  4. Enhanced Comfort: An airtight building provides better thermal comfort, as there are fewer drafts and cold spots. This contributes to a more pleasant and consistent living environment, making spaces feel cozy during winter and comfortably cool during summer.
  5. Longevity of Structures: Airtight sealants play a vital role in maintaining the structural integrity of buildings. By preventing the intrusion of moisture and air, they help protect the building envelope, reducing the risk of decay, rust, and deterioration over time.

How to Use Airtight Sealants

  1. Surface Preparation: Before applying sealant, ensure that the surfaces to be sealed are clean, dry, and free of debris, dust, and oil. Clean the area thoroughly using appropriate cleaning agents and allow it to dry completely.
  2. Choose the Right Sealant: Select a sealant that is suitable for the specific application. There are various types of sealants available, such as silicone, acrylic, polyurethane, and more. Consider factors like flexibility, adhesion, and compatibility with the materials you’re working with.
  3. Application Technique: Load the chosen sealant into a caulking gun and cut the nozzle at an angle to create an appropriate-sized opening. Apply a continuous bead of sealant along the gap, crack, or joint that needs sealing. Make sure the sealant fully covers the area to create an effective barrier.
  4. Tooling and Smoothing: To ensure proper adhesion and a neat appearance, use a tool like a caulking spatula or your finger to smooth and spread the sealant evenly. This process also helps eliminate air pockets and ensures a tight seal.
  5. Curing Time: Different sealants have varying curing times. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding the curing time before exposing the sealed area to moisture or stress.
  6. Regular Maintenance: While airtight sealants offer long-lasting protection, it’s essential to periodically inspect and maintain sealed areas. Address any signs of deterioration or damage promptly to prevent future issues.

Airtight sealants are indispensable tools for creating energy-efficient, comfortable, and durable living and working spaces. Their ability to seal gaps, cracks, and joints effectively helps maintain indoor air quality, prevent moisture intrusion, and enhance the longevity of structures. By following proper application techniques and selecting the appropriate sealant for each situation, you can harness the benefits of airtight sealants and contribute to a more sustainable and resilient built environment.
