Home Energy Upgrade Grants information – What grants are available?
Home Energy Upgrade Grants and everything you need to know!
The new Home Energy Upgrade Grants scheme was announced this week by the Government and has generated lots of interest. So lets take a look at what this is all about and what is possible for home owners in Ireland wanting to improve their home energy efficiency and ultimately spend less on their energy.
What is the Home Energy Upgrade Grant?
The Home Energy Upgrade Grants scheme offers grants to anyone owning a house built prior to 2011 to upgrade the energy efficiency of the property to achieve a minimum BER rating of B2.
The grants cover a proportion of the costs of insulation, heating control systems and renewable systems. The amount of each grant is dependent on the type of home you have and the type of work required to get to the BER B2 rating. Typically the Government expect the grant to cover approximately half of the cost for a typical family home.
Who runs this grant scheme?
The Home Energy Upgrade Grants Scheme is administered by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI). All of the work in your home is done by a private contractor and they manage the overall project to get your home to the B2 BER energy rating. These contractors are known as ‘One Stop Shops’.
To get the ball rolling you contact a One Stop Shop and details of these providers are supplied by the SEAI – info here.
Some people may prefer to manage the work themselves and there is a provision for this too from the SEAI. These are grants called ‘Individual Home Energy Grants’ and there are three schemes as part of this;
- Provision for homeowners and landlords who want to do certain energy upgrades and manage the process themselves
- Provision for people on low incomes that provides free home energy upgrades
- Provision for homeowners, landlords and approved housing bodies (AHBs) who want to bring their homes up to a BER rating of B2 or above using a private company to manage the project.

How do I apply for a grant?
The first thing you need to do is contact one of the registered One Stop Shop contractors. They will go through the grant application with you from the outset. The SEAI site has a section here regarding this.
How does the work happen?
The One Stop Shop contractor will plan and execute all of the work. The first thing they will do will be an energy assessment and provide advice as to what is needed to bring the house up to that BER B2 rating.
They will make the grant application on your behalf and accept the grant for the work. They will then manage all of the work at your home and then complete the BER assessment to ensure you have reached the B2 rating.
Payment to the contractors is normally only for the amount outstanding after the grant amount is deducted.
How do I know if I qualify?
There are a few things you need to qualify for in regards to this grant. Your property needs to be built before 2011 and have a current BER rating of B3 or lower. If you have already accessed grants for the same energy upgrades then this will rule you out and you also need to use the One Stop Shop contractor who is approved by the SEAI.
