Product Description

Germinal Family Lawn Seed. Top Quality garden lawn seed, With ryegrass. A blend of fine leaved dwarf perennial ryegrass and fescue, to provide a hard wearing, high shoot density lawn for domestic gardens.

  • Hard wearing lawn ideal for heavy use.
  • Quick to establish.
  • Contains high quality fine leaved perennial ryegrass.

Preparation

  • Before sowing the seed, it is important to prepare the soil adequately and create a seedbed. The soil should be dug or forked over to a depth of 15cm removing any stones or weeds.
  • Roughly level out the soil with a rake after digging, and allow to settle for a week.
  • Rake the site to remove new weeds and form a fine seedbed creating soil particles the size of biscuit crumbs.
  • Firm the soil down by treading the site evenly then rake level. For best results sprinkle a pre-seeding fertiliser over the area and rake into the seedbed.

Sowing The Seed

  • Sow on a calm, dry day any time between April and mid October.
  • Mix the seeds well by shaking the box and sow at 35g per square metre – this will be a reasonable handful.
  • A lower rate will mean your lawn will take longer to establish and may increase weed invasion.
  • Higher rates will increase the chance of new shoots getting diseased.
  • Scatter the seeds evenly moving from left to right, top to bottom.
  • Lightly rake the seeded area working from left to right and then front to back to partially cover the seed to a depth of 0.5cm.
  • The new grass seedlings will appear 7-21 days after sowing depending on the weather.

Note: You may wish to mark out the seedbed in square metres for more accurate results, using canes and string, or by lightly scoring the surface.

Caring For Your Seedlings

  • To deter birds from dust bathing in your new seedbed, stretch light string tied with lengths of silver soil across the area.
  • Standing on a plank will prevent you from disturbing the newly sown seeds.
  • If the weather is dry, water the area daily with a fine rose watering can or sprinkler to keep the seedbed moist.
  • Firm the soil when the grass has reached a height of 2.5cm using the back roller of your mower with the cutter head held high or alternatively firm with feet.
  • On the first cut when the lawn is 8cm, set the mower blades high to take off only 1.5cm. On subsequent cuts, gradually lower the blades until the required height is achieved. The ideal mowing height is 2.5cm.

Lawn Care Mowing

  • For the best results mow about twice a week until established.
  • Then mow regularly depending on growth and weather conditions.
  • Always remove the clippings. Fertiliser and weed control – once your lawn is established, it can be kept in good condition by applying a Spring/Summer or Autumn/Winter fertiliser, lawn feed and weedkiller, applied after the first six months, will keep the lawn healthy and control the growth of weeds already in the soil.
  • Watering – in dry periods, watering will be required daily. Raking – the use of a spring-tine rake will stop the lawn from becoming matted.
  • Try not to use your lawn for heavy activities in its first year.

Some building materials are extremely bulky and not practical to deliver outside Co. Sligo e.g. concrete blocks, tonne bags of sand or gravel or some lengths of timber. We have highlighted where this is the case in bold red writing. If you do order these products we will contact you to see if you want to pay an additional delivery charge or if you wish to cancel the order. Please do not take offence to this as some bulky goods may cost much more to deliver than the value of the goods. We are based in Sligo so can offer a local delivery service in this area using our own vehicles.

If there is a forklift or teleporter available onsite, we would appreciate if you could tell us in advance by filling out the special delivery notes when completing the order.

**Please contact us in advance of ordering if unsure of the above**
