Seasonal maintenance: Preparing your home for winter

As the days shorten and temperatures drop, preparing your home for winter is essential to ensure comfort during the colder months and protect your property from potential damage caused by frost, wind, and heavy rain.

By taking a proactive approach to winter maintenance, you can also increase the energy efficiency of your home and avoid costly repairs.

Here are some key tasks to tackle as part of your winter home preparation.

Heating system check

Your heating system is your best friend during the winter months, so making sure it’s in top condition is essential.

Start by scheduling a service for your boiler or stove.

If you need to replace any of them you can check all options on the boiler or stove section.

Regular maintenance ensures your system runs efficiently, helping you avoid breakdowns when you need it most.

If you have a wood or pellet stove, consider checking it to ensure they’re operating correctly, especially the flue pipe and chimney.

The EPH smart controls for heating systems can be a great addition to your home, allowing you to adjust the temperature from your phone and optimise energy usage.

A professional inspection will also include checking the pressure and safety valves on your system, ensuring everything is functioning smoothly.

Insulation and drafts

One of the easiest ways to improve your home’s energy efficiency and keep it warm in winter is by addressing insulation and drafts.

Cold air seeping in through gaps around windows and doors can make your heating system work harder, increasing your energy bills.

Sealing these gaps with products like sealants or even weatherstripping can make a noticeable difference.

It’s also worth checking your loft insulation to ensure it’s up to standard, as poor insulation can cause heat loss through the roof.

Proper insulation not only keeps your home warmer but can also reduce the likelihood of pipes freezing in extreme cold.

Roof and gutter inspection

Autumn leaves and storms can lead to blocked gutters, which, if left unchecked, may cause water to overflow, leading to leaks and water damage inside your home.

Make sure to clear your gutters before winter sets in, removing any debris and checking for cracks or leaks.

It’s also a good time to inspect your roof for missing or damaged tiles.

If you’re not comfortable getting up on the ladder yourself, consider hiring a professional to ensure your roof is in tip-top condition.

Preventative maintenance will help you avoid water damage caused by heavy snow and rain during winter storms.

Chimney and flue maintenance

If you have a fireplace or stove, cleaning and maintaining your chimney and flue is an important winter task.

A build-up of soot can lead to chimney fires or reduce the efficiency of your stove.

Have your chimney swept before you light your first fire of the season, and inspect your flue pipes for any blockages or damage.

If you use a pellet stove, ensure that the pellet flue pipe is securely fitted and free from obstructions.

Clean and check the internal enamel coatings of your flue pipes for signs of wear and tear and replace them whenever necessary.

Regular cleaning and maintenance will improve the efficiency of your heating system and reduce the risk of fire hazards.

Preparing exterior areas

In addition to indoor maintenance, take time to assess the exterior of your home.

Pathways and driveways can become hazardous in icy conditions, so it’s important to clear any debris and treat surfaces with de-icing products before the first frost hits.

Check outdoor lighting to ensure it’s in good working order, particularly for areas that may get slippery, such as steps or walkways.

Consider adding motion-sensor lights to improve visibility in the darker winter months.

For any outdoor furniture or garden tools, clean and store them properly to prevent damage from frost or snow.

Winter garden prep

Don’t forget about your garden when preparing for winter.

Some plants are sensitive to frost and may need extra care to survive the colder months.

You can protect plants by covering them with horticultural fleece or moving them to more sheltered areas.

It’s also a good time to tidy up the garden, removing any dead plants or leaves to avoid creating a damp environment for pests.

If you’re planning to compost, ensure your compost tumblers are properly maintained, as composting can slow down in the winter.

By taking care of your garden now, you’ll ensure that it remains healthy and ready to bloom when spring arrives.

Check emergency supplies

Winter weather can sometimes bring unexpected disruptions, such as power cuts or severe weather.

It’s a good idea to check your emergency supplies, making sure you have everything you might need in the event of an emergency.

Stock up on essentials like candles, batteries, a portable phone charger, hot water bottles, and warm blankets.

You might also want to keep a stock of non-perishable food in case you’re unable to get to the shops.

Having these items ready can provide peace of mind should the worst happen during a winter storm.

Lighting and safety

With shorter days and longer nights, you’ll be relying more on indoor lighting during winter.

Now is the time to check that all your light fixtures and bulbs are working, replacing any that are broken or dimming.

Additionally, consider installing extra lighting outside, particularly in darker areas like your driveway or garden, to keep your property safe during the evening hours.

Winter is also a time to check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Make sure they’re functioning properly, as heating systems and fireplaces can increase the risk of carbon monoxide buildup, a dangerous gas that’s colourless and odourless.

By taking the time to perform a few simple maintenance tasks, you can ensure that your home remains comfortable, safe, and energy-efficient throughout the winter.

Preventing problems before they arise can save you time, money, and stress, allowing you to enjoy the colder months without worry.
