Sack trucks, also known as hand trucks or dolly carts, are valuable tools for transporting heavy loads, reducing the risk of injury and strain on the human body. Whether you are moving boxes, equipment, or other heavy items, using a sack truck can make the task significantly easier. However, to ensure a safe working environment and prevent accidents, it is essential to understand how to use a sack truck correctly. So let’s take a look at how to use a sack truck safely.

  1. Choose the Right Sack Truck

Selecting the appropriate sack truck for the task at hand is crucial. Consider the weight and dimensions of the items you will be moving. Ensure that the sack truck’s weight capacity exceeds the heaviest load you intend to transport. There are different types of sack trucks available, such as those with stair climbers or pneumatic tires for rough terrain. Select the one that best suits your needs and ensures optimal safety.

  1. Inspect the Sack Truck

Before using the sack truck, perform a thorough inspection to ensure it is in proper working condition. Check the wheels for damage or excessive wear and tear. Verify that the handles and frame are secure and free from cracks. If any part of it appears faulty or damaged, avoid using it and have it repaired or replaced immediately.

  1. Plan Your Route

Plan your route before moving the load. Make sure the pathway is clear of obstacles, debris, or uneven surfaces. Avoid areas with excessive slopes or stairs if possible. If you must move the load up or down stairs, ensure you have a model specifically designed for this purpose.

  1. Properly Position the Load

Position the load securely. Ensure the weight is evenly distributed to prevent it from tipping over during transportation. For stability, place heavier items on the bottom and lighter items on top. If the load is loose or unbalanced, secure it with straps or bungee cords to prevent shifting.

  1. Correct Lifting Technique

When lifting the sack truck, use proper lifting techniques to avoid straining your back or causing injury. Stand close to the sack truck, bend your knees, and grip the handles firmly. Keep your back straight and lift with your legs, not your back. Avoid twisting while lifting; instead, pivot your feet to change direction.

  1. Pushing and Pulling

When pushing or pulling it, keep your body behind the handles and maintain a firm grip. Use your body weight to provide force while keeping the load steady. Avoid sudden jerks or quick movements, as they can lead to imbalance or loss of control.

  1. Be Cautious on Slopes

When navigating slopes, be extra cautious. When moving downhill, control the speed of the sack truck to prevent it from gaining too much momentum. When moving uphill, use extra force and maintain a secure grip on the handles. If the slope is too steep or slippery, consider seeking assistance or using alternative methods to move the load.

Using a sack truck safely is essential to prevent accidents and injuries in the workplace or during any transportation task. By choosing the right sack truck, inspecting it regularly, planning your route, positioning the load correctly, and using proper lifting and pushing techniques, you can ensure a safe and efficient moving process. Remember to always prioritize safety and seek help for exceptionally heavy or cumbersome loads. By following these guidelines, you can harness the full potential of a sack truck while minimizing the risk of accidents and injuries.

Bulky goods:

Bulky goods will be delivered on pallets and will be unloaded by the courier. All bulky goods are delivered kerbside. Unfortunately, the delivery company will not convey the goods into premises for storage unless agreed in advance. Access to the delivery location must be suitable for a truck and failure to provide suitable level ground for operating pallet truck may result in refusal to deliver by the courier. Please note delivery operators will apply safe procedures in relation to ongoing Public Health considerations..

Exceptional Goods:

Some building materials are extremely bulky and not practical to deliver outside Co. Sligo e.g. concrete blocks, tonne bags of sand or gravel or some lengths of timber. We have highlighted where this is the case in bold red writing. If you do order these products we will contact you to see if you want to pay an additional delivery charge or if you wish to cancel the order. Please do not take offence to this as some bulky goods may cost much more to deliver than the value of the goods. We are based in Sligo so can offer a local delivery service in this area using our own vehicles.

If there is a forklift or teleporter available onsite, we would appreciate if you could tell us in advance by filling out the special delivery notes when completing the order.

The Seller or the courier company will not be held responsible for any damage to goods or persons caused by the goods being unloaded by the buyer.

**Please contact us in advance of ordering if unsure of the above**
