Wooden decking boards add charm and functionality to outdoor spaces, providing a versatile area for relaxation and entertainment. To ensure your decking remains a welcoming haven for years to come, proper maintenance is essential. Here are some of the steps you can take to maintain wooden decking boards, preserving their beauty and structural integrity.

Regular Cleaning

The first step in maintaining wooden decking boards is to keep them clean. Accumulated dirt, debris, and organic matter can lead to decay and discoloration. Here’s how to go about it:

a. Sweep regularly: Use a stiff broom or brush to remove leaves, dirt, and debris from the surface. Make sure to get into crevices and gaps between boards.

b. Pressure washing: For a deeper clean, you can use a pressure washer with a fan tip nozzle. Keep the pressure at a moderate level to avoid damaging the wood. Follow the wood grain and maintain a consistent distance to prevent splintering.

c. Use a deck cleaner: If there are stains or mold/mildew growth, choose a deck cleaner suitable for your wood type. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

Inspect and Repair

Regular inspections are crucial to catch issues early and prevent costly repairs down the line. Check for the following:

a. Loose or popped nails/screws: Secure any loose fasteners to prevent tripping hazards.

b. Rot or decay: Inspect the boards for signs of rot or decay. Replace any affected boards promptly to maintain structural integrity.

c. Splintering: Sand down any splintered areas to prevent injuries and preserve the wood’s appearance.

Apply Protective Coatings

Wooden decking boards benefit greatly from protective coatings that shield them from the elements and enhance their natural beauty:

a. Stain or seal: Apply a wood stain or sealer to protect against moisture, UV rays, and weathering. This should be done every 1-3 years, depending on the type of wood and climate.

b. Paint: If you prefer a painted deck, use an exterior-grade paint that is designed for wood surfaces. Regularly touch up any areas showing signs of wear and tear.

Preventive Measures

To maintain wooden decking boards in top condition, consider these preventive measures:

a. Use mats or rugs: Place mats or rugs in high-traffic areas to reduce wear and tear.

b. Keep planters elevated: Avoid direct contact between planters and the deck to prevent moisture buildup.

c. Avoid standing water: Ensure proper drainage to prevent water from pooling on the deck.

d. Trim foliage: Trim overhanging branches and nearby shrubs to reduce falling leaves and debris.

Maintaining wooden decking boards is not only about aesthetics but also about safety and longevity. Regular cleaning, inspections, and protective measures are key to preserving the beauty and functionality of your outdoor space. By following these steps, you can enjoy your wooden deck for many years to come, creating a welcoming oasis for relaxation and entertainment.

Exceptional Goods:

Some building materials are extremely bulky and not practical to deliver outside Co. Sligo e.g. concrete blocks, tonne bags of sand or gravel or some lengths of timber. We have highlighted where this is the case in bold red writing. If you do order these products we will contact you to see if you want to pay an additional delivery charge or if you wish to cancel the order. Please do not take offence to this as some bulky goods may cost much more to deliver than the value of the goods. We are based in Sligo so can offer a local delivery service in this area using our own vehicles.

If there is a forklift or teleporter available onsite, we would appreciate if you could tell us in advance by filling out the special delivery notes when completing the order.

**Please contact us in advance of ordering if unsure of the above**
