How to lay concrete kerbs

Learning how to lay concrete kerbs isn’t too difficult and this is the type of job that most people can do with a bit of planning and the right materials.

It is a physical job however so you will need to be able to move the kerbs and dig out a suitable trench etc so you need to consider if this is something you are capable of doing.

A concrete kerb is an essential element in the construction of any landscape or hardscape project. It is a durable and functional addition that helps to define and separate different areas within a property. A kerb is commonly used to line driveways, pathways, garden beds, and other landscaping features.

So let’s take a look at how to lay concrete kerbs;

how to lay concrete kerbs

Step 1: Planning and Preparation

The first step in learning how to lay concrete kerbs is the same as any construction project – planning and preparation.

Start by measuring the length and width of the area where you want to install the kerb. This will help you determine the amount of concrete and materials you will need. You should also mark out the area where the kerb will be installed using string lines and pegs.

We have quantity calculators on the relevant pages to help you see how much you need but you can always contact us if needed.

Step 2: Excavation

Next, you need to excavate the area where the kerb will be installed. Use a shovel, spade, or a mechanical excavator to dig out the soil to a depth of around 200mm. Ensure that the soil is level and compacted by using a plate compactor or hand tamper. You should also use a spirit level to ensure the excavation is level and the kerb will sit flat.

Step 3: Creating a Concrete Base

Once the excavation is complete, you need to create a concrete base for the kerb to sit on. Mix a batch of concrete according to the manufacturer’s instructions and pour it into the excavation.

Spread the concrete evenly using a shovel or a rake, and then use a screed to level the concrete. A screed is a flat board that is used to smooth and level concrete surfaces.

Step 4: Installing the Kerb

When the concrete base is dry, you can begin installing the kerb. To do this, mix a fresh batch of concrete and apply it to the bottom of the kerb.

Then, place the kerb into position, ensuring that it is level and flush with the ground. Hold the kerb in place for a few minutes to allow the concrete to set and hold the kerb in place.

Step 5: Finishing

Once the kerb is in place, you can finish it off by smoothing out any rough edges with a trowel. You may also want to add some decorative touches, such as stamping or staining, to enhance the visual appeal of the kerb.

Just keep repeating this along the full length of the area you have. Once completed you can fill in around the kerbs with topsoil where it meets the lawn or garden and gravel or stone where it meets the driveway.
